JCCC athletes post key performances at Region VI and KJCCC Outdoor Championships
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College women’s track and field team recently had six individual garner All-Region VI honors, and another 10 earn East Jayhawk All-Conference in 15 events at the Region VI/Jayhawk Conference Championships in Arkansas City, Kan. 
    Sophomore vaulter Erica Culver, of Garden City, Kan., led the way, winning region and conference titles in the pole vault by clearing 10'8.75".  A three-time All-American in the vault, and 2005 indoor national champion, Culver is expected to again vie for All-America status at the NJCAA Outdoor Championships, May 18-20 in Coffeyville, Kan.
    Freshman Atilvia Spencer, a jumper and middle distance runner from Jefferson City, Mo., was the region’s second-place finisher in the triple jump with a mark of 36'3".  She also won that event in the conference standings, becoming the first JCCC athlete to win that event since 1998.  Spencer also ran a leg on the conference champion 4x800 relay, and placed third in the conference in the long jump with a mark of 15'6".
    Joining Spencer on the 4x800 relay were sophomore Niki Wright of Topeka, Kan., freshman Melissa Joyner of Leavenworth, Kan., and sophomore Haley Jackson of Ottawa, Kan.  Wright, also was the conference champion in the 800-meters with a time of 2:25.18.  That effort also earned her a third-place finish in the Region VI standings, and all-region accolades.
    Joyner and Jackson also earned all-conference honors placing third and fourth respectively in the individual 800-meters.  Joyner crossed the finish line in 2:32.99, and Jackson finished in 2:33.50.
    Freshman Katy Davenport of Manhattan, Kan.,  an All-America selection this season in basketball for JCCC, garnered All-Region VI and East Jayhawk All-Conference honors in the shot put.  Davenport placed third in the region and second in the conference with a mark of 39'10".  
    Rounding out JCCC’s all-region performances are throwers Alexis Meinke, a sophomore form Grandview, Mo, and Jara Cornett, a freshman from Ingalls, Kan.  Meinke placed fifth in the region and third in the conference in the discus with a mark of 123'4".  Meinke also earned all-conference in the shot put, placing fourth overall with a mark of 35'5.75".  Cornett placed sixth in the region in the javelin with a mark of 122'8".  That effort also earned her a runner-up finish in the conference standings.
    Freshman sprinter Leslie Reynolds, a local product out of Bishop Miege High School, earned all-conference honors in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, placing third in both events.  Reynolds posted a time of 12.88 in the 100-meters, and 26.05 in the 200-meters.
    Freshman Jenna Highly of Fort Scott, Kan., also earned multiple all-conference honors.  Highly placed fourth in the discus with a mark of 122'5", and finished fifth in the javelin with a throw of 89'4".
