JCCC signs three standout sprinters

Trichelle Heard OVERLAND PARK, KAN. --Johnson County Community College track and field coach Joe Weis recently has added three new recruits for the 2006-07 season. Trichelle Heard of Wyandotte High School, La’Kisha Lane of Highland Park High School in Topeka, Kan., and Tonya Jones of Ladue Horton Watkins High School in St. Louis, MO., have recently signed a National Letter of Intent to attend JCCC this fall. All three are sprinters, and are expected to be key additions to JCCC’s sprint corps next season.

One of the top sprinters in Kansas Class 5A, Heard earned All-State accolades in the 400-meters her junior, placing third. She followed her junior year with another third-place effort in the 400-meters, finishing with a personal best time of 58.99. She also raced to a sixth-place finish in the 100-meters and a seventh-place effort in the 200-meters. Her personal-best times in those events are 12.1h and 25.99 respectively.

Lane is a hurdler as well as a sprinter. As a sophomore, she placed sixth in the 300-meter hurdles at the Kansas 5A State Meet. She followed her junior year by earning All-State in three events, placing third in the 200-meters and 100-meter hurdles, and seventh in the 300-meter hurdles. Her personal-best marks are 25.47 in the 200-meters, 14.78 in the 100-meters and 48.09 in the 300-meter hurdles.

Jones has earned five Missouri Class 3A All-State honors as a prep sprinter. Her junior campaign, she ran on three state championship relay teams, the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400. The 4x100 team broke the state record. Used mainly has a relay member her first three seasons of competition, Jones has run the open 100-meter several times as a senior, posting a personal-best time of 12.50 FAT.
