Johnson County men’s and women’s track teams fourth at region indoors
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The Johnson County Community College men’s and women’s track and field teams recently posted fourth-place team finishes at the NJCAA Region VI/Kansas Jayhawk Conference Indoor Championships at Ahearn Fieldhouse in Manhattan, Kan. On the men’s side, six individuals accounted for championships in three events. In the conference, seven JCCC athletes helped win titles in six events. On the women’s side there were no region champions, but nine individuals helped win seven conference championships.
Imani Butler had a big day for the Cavaliers. The freshman sprinter from St. Louis was the 200-meter region and conference champion, winning the event in a school record time of 21.27, breaking the old mark of 21.32 held by former All-American Wendell Gaskin in 1993. Butler also ran a leg on the region and conference champion 4x400 relay that won with a time of 3:17.78.
Joining Butler on that relay were freshman Patrick Youngblood (Tulsa, Okla.), sophomore Curtis King (Montgomery, Ala.) and freshman Redell Frazier (Kansas City, Kan.). Youngblood also won a conference title in the 400-meters, posting a winning time of 51.77. Frazier was a multiple champion too, winning the 600-meters with a time of 1:23.29.
Freshman Randal Carter, one of the nation’s leading high jumpers to date, won region and conference titles with a mark of 6'9.75". Earlier this year Carter set the school record in the high jump with a mark of 7'3" at the Arkansas Tyson Invitational.
Rounding out the conference champions is sophomore James Tong of Kansas City, Mo. Tong won the 800-meters with a time of 1:58.38. Tong is the school’s record holder in the 1,000-meters.
On the women’s side, freshmen Tiana Davis of Kansas City, Mo., and Shaycoya Myers of Tulsa, Okla., were the team’s top performers, with each winning three events. Davis was conference champion in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.00. That effort earned a third-place finish in the region. Davis posted a personal-best time of 8.96 in the preliminary round. That effort ranks her second all-time at JCCC. Davis also won the triple jump with a mark of 35'8.5", and ran a leg on the champion 4x400 relay. Davis’ effort in the triple jump was good for a fourth-place region finish.
Myers won conference in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes, and ran leg on the 4x400 relay. Myers 60-meter time was 7.72, her third-best effort of the season. She set the school record earlier this campaign at 7.68 at the Adidas Nebraska Classic. Myers winning time in the 200-meters was 26.05. She finished runner-up and third respectively in those two events in the region standings.
