Cavaliers impressive at Sooner Invitational

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The Johnson County Community College track and field teams turned in another solid performance at the university of Oklahoma Sooner Invitational in Norman, Okla. last weekend. JCCC athletes, competing in 18 events, picked one individual title,17 top six finishes, two school records, three top five all-time performances, and seven top five all-time performers at JCCC.

Freshman Kali Jackson of Cahokia, Ill., set a school record in the triple jump en route to a third-place finish overall. Jackson record mark was 51'9.25", breaking the old mark of 51'6" set by Cecil King at the 1989 NJCAA Championships. Jackson also set the indoor mark at JCCC, and was an indoor national champion.

Freshmen Tiana Davis of Kansas City, Mo., and Whitney Miller of Cleveland, Ohio, teamed up to record personal bests in the 100-meter hurdles. Davis placed fouth with a time of 14.66. That effort ranks her fifth on JCCC’s all-time performance list. Miller was close behind, finishing fifth with a 14.96 time. Miller also recorded a personal best time in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing fifth with a time of 105.15. That effort ranks her fifth on JCCC’s all-time performers list in that event. Davis also placed sixth overall in the long jump with a mark of 18'8.5". That effort ranks her fourth on JCCC’s all-time performers list.

Freshman Sam Gros of Wamego, Kan., set a school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She finished fourth overall with a time of 12:49.31. Freshman Andrea Young of DeSoto, Kan., recorded the second best performance in this event at JCCC, finishing fifth with a time of 12:57.43.

Freshman Randal Carter of Omaha, Neb., registered a second-place finish in the high jump, clearing 6'10.75". Earlier this season at the KU Relays, Carter posted a mark of 7'1.75",  He also set the indoor record and was the 2008 indoor national champion.

Freshman Shaycoya Myers of Tulsa, Okla., raced to a fifth place finish in the 100-meter dash. She finished with a time of 12.19, which ranks her fourth on JCCC’s all-time performers list.

In the men’s 200-meters, freshman Patrick Youngblood of Tulsa, Okla., and sophomore Curtis King of Montgomery, Ala., finished fourth and fifth while posting personal best marks. Youngblood finished in 21.60, followed by King at 21.66. King also raced to a third place finish in the 100-meter dash with a personal outdoor best of 10.66. Youngblood and King also ran two of the legs on JCCC’s 4x100 relay that placed third overall with a time of 40.84. The two legs of the relay were run by freshman Eugene Williams of Miami, Fla., and freshman Whithley Williams of Weatherford, Okla.

Freshman Timer Yimer of Riverside, Mo., posted a personal best in the 5,000-meter run, finishing sixth with a time of 19:31.20. 
 
In the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, sophomore Grant Catloth of Baldwin City, Kan., and freshman Jason Rose of Louisburg, Kan., posted personal best efforts to finish fourth and fifth respectively. Catloth crossed the finish line in 9:54.18, followed by Rose at 9:59.20.

Sophomore Andy Baron of Glanvillia, Portsmouth was the only winner of the day for JCCC. He captured medalist honors in the javelin throw, posting a winning mark of 192'9". Earlier this season, Baron had a mark of 202'3" in the javelin, which moved into the fifth spot on JCCC’s all-time performers list in that event.

Rounding out JCCC’s top performances was Justin Bowen. The freshman from Spring Hill, Kan., cleared 15'7" in the pole vault, good for fifth place overall. That mark was a personal best for Bowen this season.
