JCCC wins Region VI title

OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College men’s track and field team captured the 2007 NJCAA Indoor Region VI Track and Field Championship last weekend in Manhattan, Kan.  This is the second region indoor title in team history, the first since 1994.  JCCC accumulated 145 points, 25 more than runner-up Cloud County.

The Cavaliers also were the top team in the East Jayhawk Conference standings, giving JCCC its 10th conference championship in 11 seasons.  In addition, JCCC head coach Joe Weis was selected the Region VI Men’s Coach of the Year.

A total of 20 individual accounted for 27 All-Region VI honors.  Two Cavaliers won individual events, Andy Baron in the pentathlon and Willy Cochran in the weight throw.  Baron’s 3,520 total points are the second highest by a JCCC athlete in team history.  Cochran’s mark of 54'6.5" is a career-best and ties the fourth-best mark in team history.  

The JCCC 4x400 relay team of James Tong, Rufus Triggs, Terrel Cotton and Josh Robinson were also region champions, winning the race with a time of 3:17.20, the fourth-fastest performance in JCCC history.

Sprinter Jamil Benjamin finished runner-up in the 60-meter dash, but set a school record with a time of 6.66.
