OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The Johnson County Community College men’s track and field recorded a fourth-place finish at the 2008 NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships last weekend at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Ill.  This is the team’s second straight top-five finish at indoor nationals.  The Cavaliers placed third at last year.  JCCC finished with 60 total points.  Rend Lake was the top team with 133 points, followed by Barton County with 86 and Butler with 66. Individually JCCC had three athletes win national championships, the most in one championship meet in men’s track history, indoors or outdoors,  Additionally,  the team produced 16 NJCAA Coaches All-Americans.

Sophomore Curtis King, a sprinter from Montgomery, Ala., was national champion in the 200-meters, posting a winning time of 21.75.  That effort ranks him fourth on JCCC’s all-time performers list, and earned him both NJCAA and Coaches All-America accolades.  King also placed fourth in the 60-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 6.88, earning him Coaches All-American.   His time of 6.88 also ranks him fourth on JCCC’s all-time performers list in the 60-meters.

Freshman jumper Kali Jackson of Cahokia also was multiple All-American performer.  Jackson was national champion in the triple jump, posting a winning mark of 51'1.5".  That effort ranks second all-time in school history. Jackson set the school record earlier this season at 51'7" when he won the event at the Iowa State Open, Jan. 25.  Jackson owns four of the top five marks all-time at JCCC in the triple jump.  He was NJCAA and Coaches All-American in that event.  Jackson also earned Coaches All-American in the long jump with a third-place finish.  He posted a school record and season-best mark of 24'9.25", bettering the old record of 24'8" set in 1993 by Channing Berry.

Freshman Randal Carter of Omaha, Neb., earned a national title in the high jump, clearing 7'1.75", earning him NJCAA and Coaches All-American.  That effort ties the third-best performance in school history.  Carter owns the school record.  He set the record of 7'3", Feb. 15, at the Tyson invitational host by the university of Arkansas.

Sophomore James Tong of Kansas City, Mo., earned two Coaches All-America certificates this year, upping his career total to six All-America honors.  Tong raced to a seventh-place finish in the 1,000-meter run, finishing in 2:32.61.  Tong finished runner-up in this event last year, posting a school record time of 2:27.49.  Tong got his second All-America honor as a member of the 4x800 relay that placed sixth overall.

Other members of that relay were freshman Brian Beachum of Wichita, Kan., sophomore Daniel Everhart of Kansas City, Kan., and sophomore Keith Cowart of Baldwin City, Kan.  Beachum, Everhart and Cowart also ran a leg on the Cavaliers distance medley relay that placed fifth and earned the squad Coaches All-American.  Joining those three on the relay was freshman Patrick Youngblood of Tulsa, Okla.

Freshman vaulter Justin Bowen of Spring Hill, Kan., added his name to the long list of JCCC pole vaulters to earn All-American.  Bowen recorded a third-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 14'6".

Rounding out the JCCC’s Coaches All-America honorees is sophomore Alex Troncoso of Kansas City, Mo.  Troncoso finished 14th overall in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:46.53, but earned his honor by placing among the top six American runners in the event.  This is Troncoso’s third All-American honor of his career at JCCC.
