Johnson County Women fifth at NJCAA National Tennis Championships

OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College women’s tennis team posted its 10th straight top 10 finish at nationals, placing fifth in the NJCAA Division II Tennis Championships in Randolph Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz., May 5-11.  The Cavaliers finished two points and two places ahead of conference rival Cowley County Community College.  Their fifth-place effort matches last season’s finish, which ties the best effort in a Division I tournament by a Cavaliers’ team.  JCCC’s all-time best finish was third at the D-II championships in 1999.
Leading the way was the Cavaliers No. 1 doubles team of sophomores Diana Goldsmith and Megan deBlonk (Emporia, Kan.).  The pair reached the semifinals before falling to the eventual runner-up  team from Hillsborough.   Seeded third in the bracket, Goldsmith and deBlonk received a bye in the first round.  They downed the No. 1 team from Snead State in the round of 16 with a straight set, 6-2, 6-1 victory.  The pair followed by a 6-4, 6-2 win over Central Alabama in the quarterfinals, setting up their semifinal match with Hillsborough.
JCCC’s No. 2 doubles team of sophomores Jamie Lawrenz and Kalie Harris and No. 3 team of sophomore Audrey Sherman and freshman Colleen Tearney each finished 1-1 in their respective brackets.
In singles play,  Tearney led the way reaching the semifinal round in the No. 6 bracket.  The fifth seed in the bracket, Tearney opened with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Tabatha Heflin of Sinclair.  She followed with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 hard-fought victory over the No. 4 seed Amy Isbell from Tyler Junior College, before falling to No. 1 seed Jessica Aguilar from Lee College, 0-6, 1-6 in the semifinals.
JCCC’s No. 1 player Goldsmith, No. 4 player Harris and  No. 5 player Lawrenz each reached the quarterfinal round in their respective brackets.  deBlonk at No. 2 and Sherman at No. 3 were quarterfinalist in their respective brackets.
