JCCC men's tennis wins Region VI title, advances to nationals

OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The men’s tennis team captured its eighth conference/region championship this season, but its first title since 1999.  The Cavaliers edged rival Cowley College by a half point to win the championship.  JCCC will advance to the NJCAA  National Tournament May 13-18, in Plano, Texas.  It is JCCC’s 24th appearance at nationals.  JCCC players reached the finals in all nine spots, winning four championships.  Sophomore Zach Frisch won at the No 1 singles and double slots.  He defeated Cowley’s Lukas Hyl 6-2, 6-3 in singles, and he teamed with Quinton Peterson-Paul to down Cowley’s Hyl and Clay Cypert 4-6, 7, 6-3 in doubles play.  The last JCCC player to win both singles doubles titles was in 2000.  Frisch has a singles record of 13-3.  He and Peterson-Paul are 12-3 in doubles play.  Also winning titles for JCCC were Steffen Solomon at the No. 3 singles spot, and Zach Alholm at No. 6 singles.  Solomon defeated Cowley’s Richard Filkuka 6-4, 7-6, and Alholm downed Sean Cobble of Cowley, 7-6, 6-2.  Solomon is 13-3 overall, and Alholm is 10-6 on the season.
