Johnson County men eighth at NJCAA National Tennis Championships
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College men’s tennis team posted its 10th straight top 10 finish at nationals, placing eighth at the NJCAA Division II Tennis Championships at the Maureen Connolly Brinker Courts in Plano, Texas., May 15-19. Their eighth-place effort is the team’s second highest finish at the Division I level. The Cavaliers finished seventh last year. JCCC’s all-time best finish was third at the D-II championships in 1989 and 1992.
Leading the way were the Cavaliers No. 1 doubles team of freshman Quinton Peterson-Paul and sophomore Diego Mayorga and No. 3 team of sophomores Kyle Cumberland and Tyler Shelley. Each team reached the quarterfinals in their respective brackets.
In singles play, five of JCCC’s six participants won their opening match, advancing to the round of 16. Peterson-Paul downed Thomas Doebbert of Meridian 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1. Mayorga opened with a 6-1, 6-0 win in the No. 2 bracket against Robert Logan of Lewis and Clark. Cumberland also had a first round 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No. 4 spot, downing Joseph Meek from Meridian. Shelley had a relatively easy opening match, winning 6-1, 6-3 over Snead Anemovic of Spartanburg Methodist, and sophomore David Scott breezed through his first match with a 6-1, 6-1 in over Andy Hertel of Sinclair. He lost in the round of 16 to No. 1 seed Hugo Vidal of Tyler Junior College.
