JCCC doubles team second at ITA Small College Championships

OVERLAND PARK, KS --  The Johnson County Community College doubles team of Zach Frisch and Quinton Peterson-Paul posted a runner-up finish at the 2006 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA )National Small College Championships at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Fla. last weekend.  This is the first time a JCCC team has reached the final in this event.

The pair opened the tournament with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Morgan Hollady and Aaron Knepper of Central Alabama Community College. They followed with an unusual win over Paul Fitzgerald and Jayraj Jadeja of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.  JCCC won the first set, 6-4, and the teams were knotted at 4-4 when Fitzgerald ran head first into a light pole near the court.  He lost a significant number of teeth, and and to be carted off the court, ending the match.  Fitzgerald did return to action the following day to win the singles tournament.

JCCC then faced Tyler Junior College in the finals, a team who easily handled JCCC last May at the NJCAA Championship.  Tyler prevailed again, only this time it was a battle.  JCCC lost the match 6-7, 3-6, but their performance earned them high praises from their coach, Glen Moser.

“I couldn’t be more pleased,”  Moser said.  “They seemed to gel really well together and that is a must in doubles play.  They complement each other very well.  Zach is more a finesse-type player with great locations on his shots.  Quinton has more power on his serves and grounds strokes.  I think that is good combination.

Moser said by virtue of their performance, Frisch and Peterson-Paul will open the spring season ranked No. 2 in the country.

These two qualified for the championship by winning the Wilson/ITA East Region earlier a few weeks earlier.  JCCC downed rival Baryon County in the title match, 6-1, 6-3.
