JCCC softball team falls in national tournament

The Cavaliers, the runner-up finisher in last year’s championship, opened the tournament this year with a 7-2 win over Oakland Community College. Lindsay Bowers and Kacee McDonald each had three hits to lead the Johnson County. Bowers was 3-for-3 with a double and home run, McDonald’s was 3-for-4, all singles. Krista Cummings went 2-for-3 at plate, and belted her 17 home run, which ties her season record from 2007. Jamin Landreth got the win, going 5.1 innings. Katie Ford pitched the finals 1.2 innings.
JCCC followed with a hard-fought extra inning loss to Copiah-Lincoln, 9-5. Tied at 5-5, Copiah-Lincoln won on Becca Bailey walk-off grand slam home run. Bowers hit her second home run of the tournament for JCCC, and Debbie Schlagel belted her first in the championship to power JCCC’s attack. Sam Neely led the team with two RBI.
The Cavaliers hopes of returning to the title game ended later in second day with a 10-2 loss to Lansing Community College. McDonald and Cummings accounted for five of JCCC’s six hits. McDonald was 3-for-3 and Cummings, 2-for-3, and collected her record setting 18 home run, a two run shot in the bottom of the sixth inning.
