JCCC Wins Women’s Region VI Soccer Title
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- Avenging a loss is sweet, but when that is coupled with the elimination of a team from postseason play, it is bitter sweet. That is what the Johnson County Community College women’s soccer team accomplished Sunday evening in the final of the Region VI Soccer Championship in Chanute, Kan. JCCC downed No. 8 and previously unbeaten Butler County Community College 2-0, to capture the region title. Butler County defeated the Lady Cavaliers 5-0 earlier in the season, JCCC’s only loss. The Lady Cavaliers improves to 18-1-1 on the season, while Butler County ends its season at 17-1-1. This is JCCC’s fourth region title in the program’s seven-year history, but its first since 2002.
Johnson County only had three shots on goal in the game, but were able to make the most of those opportunities. Sophomore Andree' Volin got JCCC on the board when she netted her 13th goal of the season, firing a shot past Grizzly keeper Meredith Stimson at the 30:23 mark of the first half. Five minutes and 19 seconds into the second half, JCCC added its final goal on a shot by freshman Ashley Daniels. Sophomore Fivi Mihai, was credited with the assist on both goals.
JCCC sophomore goalkeeper Liz Casey registered one of her best games at JCCC, stopping all nine shots she faced, securing her 10th shutout of the season, and 16th victory.
The Lady Cavaliers advanced to the title game by downing Hutchinson in the semifinal round on Saturday. Mihai netted both goals in the game, the first 18 minutes into the game, and second with just four minutes played in the second half. Daniels and freshman Katie Rice provided the assists. Casey again was tough in the net, recording five saves.
The Cavaliers will continue their quest for a first national tournament appearance this weekend, when they travel to Laramie, Wyo., to face No. 6 Dixie State College of Utah in the first round of the District Tournament. Dixie State College placed fifth at nationals last year, and won the championship in 2003. The winner advances to the final match against Laramie County Community College. The NJCAA National Soccer Championship is hosted by Paradise Valley Community College in Phoenix, Ariz, Nov. 17-20.
