Six JCCC women’s soccer players earn KJCCC and Region VI honors

OVERLAND PARK, KS --  A total of six individuals from the Johnson County Community College women’s soccer team were named as Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference and Region VI performers for the 2006 seasons.

Heading the list was JCCC freshman forward Rachelle Luster, who was selected as both the KJCCC freshman of the Year and most valuable player.  She was also the number one vote getter in the region.  Luster currently leads the nation in scoring with 103 total points on 34 goals and 35 assists.  She is the first player in JCCC soccer history to score of 100 points in a single season.  The previous high was 72.  She already ranks tied for second on the career points chart.  The career record is 112 by Traci Kesterson. Luster has had 11 multiple goal games this season, including a three-goal, four-goal and six-goal performance.  She has also had 12 multiple-assist matches, including two matches with three, and two with four assists. Her 35 assists on the season are a new team record.  Luster was the NJCAA offensive player of the week for the week of Oct. 25.  Luster led Johnson County to a 2-0 record that week that included wins over Hutchinson and Allen County. In the 5-2 win over Hutchinson she totaled four points on one goal and two assists. In a 14-1 win over Allen County Luster scored what was a school-record six goals and added four assists for 16 points.

Joining her on the first team were freshmen forwards Danielle Blevins and Emily Leeper, and freshman goalkeeper Megan Brown.  Second-team honors went to sophomores Chelsea Sheahan and Monique Richardson.

Blevins is also having a record-setting season.  She ranks second in the NJCAA with 100 points.  She has scored a team record 38 goals and has 24 assists. Blevins has nine multiple-goal and eight multiple-assist matches this season. She began her collegiate career with a five-goal, two-assist effort in a win over Florissant Valley.  Her five goals tied a team record at the time. She also had four-goal efforts against Dodge City and Allen County, but her breakout game came in the first round of the Region VI Playoffs. Blevins tied a national record with eight goals in a 19-0 win over Cloud County. She also had four assists giving her 20 points, also a new team record. Blevins added four more goals and an assist in the following two games in the playoffs, bringing her postseason totals to 12 goals, five assists and 29 points. Her 29 points and 12 goals shatter the previous JCCC records in postseason play.

Leeper, the nation’s fourth leading scorer with 79 points, ranks third on JCCC’s season scoring chart.  She too passsed the previous season record for points at 72.  Leeper has 31 goals and 17 assists to date.

She has seven multiple-goal games, including three hat tricks. In her second collegiate match, Leeper had a six-goal, one assist effort in a 13-0 win over Coffeyville.  Her six-goal effort set the single game record at JCCC which was later broken by Blevins. That effort earned Leeper the first NJCAA offensive player of the week honor for the 2006 season. Leeper also had an 11-point effort in JCCC’s record 19-0 win over Cloud County in the first round of the region playoffs. Leeper had three goals and tied a team record with five assists.  She added a goal and an assist in each of the next two matches, helping JCCC win the region title.

Brown, the team’s top goalkeeper, has a record of 17-0-2 in net this season, and a goals against average of 0.81, which ranks her 26th in the NJCAA.   She has allowed only 12 goals in the 20 matches she has seen action, and saved 62 shots.  She has four full shutouts to her credit, and has shared the five other shutouts, giving 6.5 shouts on the season.  Her 17 wins tie the second-best season at JCCC, and one more would place her in a tie for first. She ranks eighth on both the save percentage and saves chart at JCCC, and her 6.5 shutouts are fifth for a season.

Sheahan, an all-region pick as a freshman, ranks fifth on the team total points with 29, but ranks third in assists with 17.  Her 17 assists tie the sixth-best season total at JCCC. Sheahan also currently ranks in the top-10 in career points, assists and goals.  Her 74 career points rank eighth all-time.  Her 30 career assists rank third and her 22 career goals tie for 10th.

Richardson has been a key leader on the defensive end of the field for JCCC.  She has keyed a defensive unit that has allowed only 17 goals in 20 matches, good for a goals against average of 0.83.  The defensive also has nine shutouts to its credit.  Richardson has also come up front to help out offensively.  She has seven assists this season, including one in the Cavaliers region semifinal win over Neosho County.
