JCCC wins region title, advances to district championship
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College women’s soccer team recently captured the NJCAA Region VI championship, defeating Hutchinson Community College 3-0, Sunday evening, at Hummer Park in Topeka, Kan. For JCCC it was its second straight Region VI title, and the fifth in the program’s eight-year existence.
JCCC (18-0-2) advances to the District B Championship Game on Saturday, Nov. 4, at JCCC. The Cavaliers will host the winner of the Western Nevada and Laramie match on Friday, Nov. 3. Both matches are scheduled to start at noon each day.
JCCC dominated the match, getting 17 shots off compared to only two for the Lady Dragons, who earned their spot in the final by downing nationally ranked Butler County, 1-0 in the semifinals.
The trio of freshmen forwards Rachelle Luster, Danielle Blevins and Emily Leeper played a part in all three scores for JCCC. Blevins added to her team record goal total scoring the first and third goals, bringing her season total to 38. Luster had two assists, increasing her season point total to 103, which leads the nation. She is the first player to top 100 points in a single season at JCCC. The previous season high was 72. Blevins is at 100 points, and ranks second nationally. Leeper scored a goal and had an assist. She now has 79 points on the season which ranks her fourth in the NJCAA. Freshman goalkeeper Megan Brown earned the shutout.
JCCC advanced to the championship by downing Neosho County 10-1 on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Courtney Cowan led the way with her third hat trick of the season. Also scoring multiple goals were Luster and Blevins. Luster also had two assists, and Blevins had one. Leeper had a goal and assist, as did sophomore Chelsea Sheahan . Rounding out the scoring for JCCC were Ashley Daniels (1 goal), Monique Richardson (1 assist), Lindsay Wiese (1 assist), Danielle Fesler (1 assist) and Lara Jonasus (1 assist).
JCCC began its run to the title with a record 19-0 win over Cloud County. Blevins tied a national record scoring eight goals. She also had four assists giving her 20 points, also a new team record. Leeper has three goals and tied a single-game record with five assists, and Cowan netted a career-high four goals along with two assists.
