Cavaliers take over first in the conference race

OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College women’s soccer team moved  a step closer to securing the 2007 Kansas Jayhawk Conference title over the weekend, downing Butler Community College, 1-0.  The victory upped JCCC’s season mark to 13-2-1.  They remain undefeated in conference play at 8-0-0.  JCCC has two remaining conference matches against Barton County (8-6-1) on Oct. 13,  and Independence (3-10-0) on Oct. 18.  Both matches are at home

Both teams held each other in check in the first half, then in the 63rd minute of the contest, JCCC’s leading scorers Rachel Luster and Emily Leeper hooked up for the only goal of the match.  Leeper feed Luster off a corner kick.  It was Luster’s 16th goal of the season, and 46th point.  She ranks 11th in the NJCAA in total points.  Leeper now has 15 goals and 11 assists for 41 points, and she ranks 19th nationally

Sophomore Megan Brown saved all 12 shots she faced to earn the shutout.  She improved her goals against average to .521,  which ranks her eighth in the NJCAA.

Another key defensive player was freshman Shae Sawalich.  She led the defense in front of Brown, and her effort earned KJCCC Player of the Week honors.
