Cavaliers hold off Dragons
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College women’s soccer team, ranked 10th in this week’s NJCAA poll, improved to 12-2-1 with a hard-fought, 2-1 win over Hutchinson Community College, Wednesday afternoon. The victory kept JCCC’s record perfect against the Dragons at 5-0-0.
JCCC’s top two scorers this season, sophomores Emily Leeper and Rachel Luser, hooked up just 14 minutes into the match, giving JCCC an early 1-0 lead. Leeper scored the goal, her 15th on the season, bringing her point total to 40. Luster had the assist. She added a second assist early in the second half, helping Lara Jonusas net her first goal of the 2007 season. Luster, the program’s all-time leading scorer, has 44 points this season and 147 for her career.
JCCC appeared to be on its way to another easy victory until the Dragon’s Johanna Adolf fired a shot past Megan Brown from 30-feet. Hutchinson seemed to come alive with Adolf’s goal, and kept the pressure on Brown and the Cavaliers defense. The Dragons had several opportunities late in the match, but could not convert.
Both goalkeepers played extremely well. Brown stopped seven of eight shots, while her counter part, Carly McArthur, recorded a season-high nine saves in 11 chances.
