Cavaliers impressive in season opener
OVERLAND PARK, KS --The Johnson County Community College women’s soccer team entered the 2008 season with several question marks, mainly, who would step up this season to replace the offense lost with the graduation of Rachelle Luster, Emily Leeper and Courtney Cowan? It took just 46 seconds to find out. Freshman forward Caitlin Sutter (Blue Valley West) scored the second fastest goal to open a match in team history, the first of her three goals on the day. Sutter also scored the team’s third and seventh goals of an 11-0 season opening win over Dodge City Community College.
The Cavaliers 11 goals scored are the most in a home opener in team history, and the third highest total in an opener. Last year, JCCC opened the season on the road with an 18-0 blowout against Cloud County.
In addition to Sutter’s effort, a total of 11 other JCCC’s players either scored a goal or had an assist. Freshman Jessica Smith (Basehor Linwood) had two goals, freshman Megan Weston (Olathe West) had a goal and two assists, and freshman Madison Bertrand (Lawrence) and Andrea Weisner (Moberly, Mo.) each had a goal and an assist. Single goals were provided by sophomore Sara Brummett (Shawnee Mission South), freshman Jordan Shechter (Naples, Fla.) and freshman Suzie Kahler (Kansas City Christian). Sophomore Jessica Johnson (Shawnee Mission South), sophomore Kaylee Harkins (Piper), freshman Jamie Hertling (Washburn Rural) and Miranda Kirksey (Washburn Rural) had an assist.
The Cavaliers look to up its season mark to 2-0 on Saturday, Aug. 30, when the travel to Council Bluffs, Iowa, to face Iowa Western Community College.
