Cavaliers play well in weekend classic

Shadfar    OVERLAND PARK, KS --  The Johnson County Community College men’s soccer team posted a win and a tie last weekend against two quality programs, improving their 2006 season mark to 2-1-1.

JCCC began the weekend with an impressive 6-0 shutout over South Suburban College, improving to 3-0-0 against the Bulldogs.  The Cavaliers got on the board early when sophomore Shane Shadfar found the back of the net just 2:29 into the match.  Sophomore Matt Iverson was credited with first of his two assists.  Shadfar and Iverson hooked up again for the team’s fifth goal of the match.

Iverson also scored two goals.  Iverson scored JCCC’s second and fourth goals of the game.  The other two goals were scored by sophomores Jason Jacob and Nathaniel Bliss.  Jacob also had two assists, both on Iverson’s goals.

JCCC followed that blowout with a 120-minute scoreless battle against Iowa Western.  Both teams fired seven shots on goal, but each team’s goalkeeper and defense held offenses in check.  Freshman Andy Baron earned the shutout for JCCC, the first of his collegiate career.
“We worked on crosses and finishing during practice last week, and it paid off,”  said JCCC assistant coach Carlos Olivas.  “We hit our targets against South Suburban.  We played just a well against Iowa Western, but we just couldn’t finish.  We will get better each time we take the field.  The guys are starting to play together as a team.”

JCCC looks to continue its strong play this weekend with two games in St. Louis against Florissant Valley and Southwestern Illinois.  The Cavaliers return home for a match with Neosho County, Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 4 p.m.
