Cavaliers play well with little to show

OVERLAND PARK, KS --  The Johnson County Community College men’s soccer team recently played three solid matches last week, unfortunately, they came up on the short end in two of them to nationally ranked teams.  JCCC lost one-goal matches to No. 13 ranked Northern Oklahoma on Sept. 20, and to No. 3 ranked Mercer County Sept. 22.  The ended the week with a 2-2 tie against Essex County on Sept. 23.

In the 2-1 loss to Northern Oklahoma, JCCC sophomore Jason Jacob got the Cavaliers on the board first with his sixth goal of the season, scoring on an assist from Russell Anderson just past the five minute mark of the match.

The Mavericks Alex Munro tied the score at 1-1 twenty minutes later, then Sam Vernalls gave Northern Oklahoma their first lead at 58:16 of the match.

JCCC followed with a tough 3-2 road loss to Mercer County.   The Cavaliers gave the perennial NJCAA power all it could handle.  Mercer struck first on a goal by Anthony Moy 36 minutes into the match.  It remained a 1-0 match until JCCC sophomore Jonathon Baldwin fired a game-tying shot in net at the 59:22 mark of the match.   Mercer County regained a one-goal edge 12 minutes later when Awel Ahmed fired a shot past JCCC keeper Andy Baron, but Baldwin connected again in the 76th minute, knotting the match at 2-2.   Mercer County scored the game-winner in the 81st minute as Moy found the back of the net for a second time in the match.

JCCC came away from it New Jersey trip with a 2-2 tie against Essex County, but this is a match the Cavaliers let slip away.  JCCC jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Jacob and freshman Marlon Beach, only to see Essex chip away at the JCCC’s lead, netting goals late in the first half and early in the second.

The Cavaliers, 4-5-3 on the season, travel to Hesston Sept. 28, then return home to host Iowa Central on Friday, Sept. 29 at 4 p.m.
