JCCC thunders past Cloud County

OVERLAND PARK, KS --  Cool temperatures and rain seemed to have little effect on the  Johnson County Community College men’s soccer team Wednesday afternoon, as the offense exploded for 11 goals en route to an 11-3 home win over Cloud County.  JCCC’s 11-goal outburst is the highest total since the Cavaliers blanked Hesston 11-0 during the 2001 campaign.

Leading JCCC's offense was sophomore Jason Jacob, who tied a team record netting four goals.  He now shares the record with Scott Noernberg (1991), Rich Carrol (1992), Shawn Beyer (1993) and Shawn Andrews (2003).  Jacob scored the first two goals, the sixth and 10th. He leads the squad this season in both goals (11) and points (26).

Sophomore Matt Iverson, the team’s leading scorer last season, was credited with three goals, giving him is second career hat trick.  Iverson netted the Cavaliers’ third, eighth and 11th goals of the game.  He is second to Jacob in both goals scored and points with nine and 22 respectively.

Sophomore Jonathon Baldwin, last week’s conference player of the week, added two goals, upping his season point total to 17.  Also scoring single goals were sophomore Shane Shadfar and freshman Garret Stahl.  Shadfar also had four assists, and Stahl was credited with two assists.

JCCC took control early, and by halftime had the game sealed up, leading 9-to-1.  The victory improved JCCC’s mark to 6-7-5.   The Cavaliers host cross-town rival Kansas City Kansas on Saturday, then end the regular season on Oct. 19, when they host Allen County.
