Cavaliers win JCCC Designated

OVERLAND PARK, KS --  The Johnson County Community College golf team used a strong second round to come from behind and win the JCCC Conference Designated at Alvamar Golf Course in Lawrence, Kan., Monday, April 16.  JCCC was in second-place after round one, trailing Hutchinson by four shots.  JCCC fought back in the second round to win the event by five shots.  Four of JCCC’s five golfers finished in the top 10, and their fifth player just missed a top-10 finish, placing 11th overall.

Sophomore Matt Salome was the top finisher for JCCC, placing in a tie for second.  Salome, fresh of his win at the Bethel Invitational earlier this month, fired a disappointing round of 79 to open the JCCC Designated.  He fought back in the second round, posting a tournament-best 71, giving him a 150 total.  He tied Grady Pauls of Hutchinson, who had the first round lead with a 72, but he fell back with a 78 in second round.  The winner was Dodge City’s Ryan Robertson with posted rounds of 75 and 74 for a 149 total.

JCCC freshman Nate Sargent placed fourth, four shots back of Salome and Pauls.  He fired rounds of 76 and 78 for a 154 total.  Also in the top-10 for JCCC were freshmen Keith Erickson and Mike Elafros.  The two tied for eighth with 156 totals. Both players shot back-to-back rounds of 78.  Just outside the top-10 was sophomore Andrew Manley.  He finished with a 158 36-hole score.  Manley opened with an 82, but came back strong with a 76, the third best score of the second round.
