JCCC student-athletes to be honored for academic excellence
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The Johnson County Community College athletic staff knows what to look for in a prospective student-athlete. To be a Cavalier is to have the determination to succeed – not only on the playing field but in the classroom as well. Balancing academic achievement with athletic success is a primary focus of Johnson County Community College athletics.
On Wednesday night, Feb. 1, 2006, a total of 105 Johnson County Community College student-athletes will be honored for their academic excellence. They will be recognized at the annual Student-Athlete Academic Honors Night. The special ceremony will be conducted between the men’s and women’s basketball games, at approximately 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 1, in the JCCC gym. JCCC hosts Neosho County Community College that night. The men’s game is scheduled for 5 p.m., with the women’s game following at 7 p.m.
All of the athletes to be honored have grade-point averages of 3.0 or above. Coaches, counselors and the student’s parents will be on hand. Dr. Charles J. Carlsen, president of JCCC, and Elaine Perilla, chair of the JCCC Board of Trustees, will present the awards to the students.
“Our student-athletes frequently note that they chose Johnson County not only for its strong athletic traditions but for its outstanding academic reputation,” said JCCC athletic director Carl Heinrich. “They realize the academic challenges that lie ahead, but understand the importance of strong academic preparation for their future careers.”
