Kracl, McCoy selected JCCC athletes of the year
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- Johnson County Community College sophomore Lauren Kracl of the volleyball team, and sophomore Todd McCoy of the men’s basketball team were announced as the female and male athletes of the year at JCCC’s annual awards dinner. The event was held May 3 at the Ritz Charles in Overland Park, Kan.
In addition, each team announced their most valuable player, Cavalier award winner and top academic sophomore.
Kracl, an outsider hitter from Eudora, Kan., was also named to first-team All-American by the National Junior College
Athletic Association and the American Volleyball Coaches Association after leading JCCC to its first national volleyball title.
The Cavaleirs finished the season 35-4. Kracl was voted MVP of the national tournament after leading JCCC with 98 digs and a hitting percentage of .270. She also was voted the top player in District K, Region VI and the East Jayhawk Conference earlier this month. She is the fifth player in team history to earn MVP of the conference.
Kracl ended the year ranked among the top players nationally in kills and digs per game. Her 434 total kills and 495 digs this season rank third all-time at JCCC. Earlier in the campaign, Kracl was twice selected the Kansas Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week, and on she was the NJCAA Player of the Week for Sept. 18-24. Kracl will continue her education and play volleyball at the University of Kansas.
McCoy, a guard from Philadelphia, Pa., became the eighth player in team history to earn NJCAA All-America accolades, and fifth under head coach Mike Jeffers, earning second-team accolades. McCoy also earned first-team NJCAA D-II Region VI first-team and East Jayhawk Conference first-team honors. He joined the JCCC basketball program after playing his freshman year at New Mexico Junior College, and he proved to be a key addition. His efforts helped JCCC post an 18-15 record and win its fourth Region VI D-II title in seven years. The Cavaliers came one win shy of reaching the NJCAA D-II National Tournament.
McCoy nearly led JCCC in every category in 2005-06. He also ranked among the NJCAA leaders in scoring, and free throw percentage. McCoy was the team’s top offensive player, averaging 16.2 points per game, and the top rebounder, averaging 7.6 per game. He also led the team in free throws (130), free throw percentage (.756) and field goals (184). He was second in 3-point field (37), 3-point field goal percentage (.370), assists (82) and steals (60).
McCoy scored in double figures in 29 games, including 10 games of 20 or more points. He also had 12 double-doubles on the season. He was the team’s top scorer in 15 games, and top rebounder 17 times. He poured in a career high 30 points against defending Region VI champion Pratt at the Jayhawk Shootout in early December.
McCoy also etched his name among the all-time leaders at JCCC. His 535 total points rank as the 16th-best season in team history, his 130 free throws tie the seventh-best season mark, and his .756 free throw percentage ranks 10th on the career chart. McCoy will continue his education and play basketball at Indiana State University.
