JCCC third in Pepsi/NATYCAA Cup Standings

OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators recently presented the 2006 Pepsi/NATYCAA Cup Awards at its annual convention.  The  Pepsi/NATYCAA Cup Award recognize program excellence in two-year college athletics at the national level.  JCCC finished third in this year’s standings.  JCCC has finished sixth, second  and third in the three-year history of the award.  
Carl, Heinrich, JCCC athletics director, was presented the  the trophy and $1,000 donation for JCCC’s general scholarship fund at the New Orleans Marriott June 20, 2006.  Richard Wilson of PepsiAmericas. Lou Pullano, NATYCAA President and Jim Larranaga, head basketball coach at George Mason University,  were the presenters.


“This award is a tribute to the athletes and coaches for their hard work and dedication to JCCC,” JCCC athletics director Carl Heinrich said.  “They have lived up to the expectations and mission of the school.  It was another great year for JCCC.”


The awards are broken into three divisions -- scholarship, non-scholarship and state associations.   Monroe (N.Y.) Community College finished first in the Pepsi Cup scholarship division  with  147.5 points, followed by Mesa (Ariz.) Community College with 133.5 and JCCC  with 123.5 points.  Other Kansas Jayhawk Conference schools that placed in the top 10 were Cowley College at No. 4, Butler County at No. 6, and Barton County at No. 7.  


Scoring for the program is based on the highest level of competition at which the member colleges participate.  Scoring is based on a maximum of 20 points for each sport with the NJCAA National Champion in each sport receiving 20 points, the National Runner-up receiving 19 points, third place 18 points, etc.  


The JCCC volleyball team accounted for 20 points by winning the 2005 NJCAA Championship.  Other top 10 finishes turned in by JCCC teams were the men’s and women’s cross country teams, the women’s basketball team, the men’s and women’s tennis teams and the women’s indoor track team.


The pursuit of excellence is evident in Johnson County Community College intercollegiate athletics.  JCCC Athletics is regarded throughout the region and nation as a first-class program and regularly ranks among the top of the national rankings.
