JCCC hoop teams help fight cancer

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The Johnson County Community College women’s and men’s basketball programs took part in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s 2008 “Think Pink” campaign during both the JCCC home games against  Cowley College, Wednesday, Feb. 13. JCCC donated one dollar from each paid admission benefiting the Breast Cancer Foundation. Voluntary donations were also accepted at the entrance to the JCCC Gymnasium. The Lady Cavaliers donned pink shoe laces to commemorate the occasion.

Additionally, the officials for the women’s game used pink whistles, and men blue whistles, in their campaign “Blowing the Whistle for Cancer” in support of finding a cure for cancer. Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference officials are donating a portion of their game checks to this worthy cause. Kala Glass of the American Cancer Society was on hand to present the game ball.

The Lady Cavaliers overcame an 11-point halftime deficit to defeat Cowley, 60-42. The Cowley men’ defeated JCCC, 59-54.

The WBCA’s “Think Pink” initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA’s nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. Founded in 1981, the WBCA promotes women’s basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game as a sport for women and girls. More than 800 schools have pledged support to make this year’s “Think Pink” a success.
