OVERLAND PARK, KS -- Carl Heinrich, athletics director at Johnson County Community College, was named as an Astro Turf Athletics Director of the Year at the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) convention in Dallas, Texas, June, 9-12, 2008. Heinrich was the Central District winner at the Junior College/Community College level.

Heinrich, the leader behind one of the nation’s more successful athletics programs, enters his ninth year as JCCC’s athletics director. He oversees a 40-year-old department that now fields 18 varsity sports.

During his tenure at JCCC, the Cavaliers have claimed six of the school’s eight National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championships, 39 NJCAA Region VI titles and 46 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference championships. Under Heinrich, a total of 101 teams have earned NJCAA National Tournament berths, with 38 finishing among the top-five nationally. Individually, 371 athletes have garnered NJCAA All-America accolades under his post, and 87 student-athletes have earned NJCAA Academic All-America honors.

The JCCC athletic department also has earned five top-10 finishes in the NATYCAA Cup, an award which recognizes program excellence in two-year college athletics at the national level.  JCCC finished first in this year’s standings, its highest finish in the five-year history of the award.  JCCC has finished sixth, second  and third twice in the previous four years.

Heinrich is currently the 2nd Vice President of National Alliance of Two Year College Athletics Administrators, and previously served three years as the association’s treasurer. He also serves on the Executive Committee for NACDA.

Heinrich graduated from the University of Kansas in 1978, and was a member of the Jayhawks baseball team. He set school records for career at bats (648), hits (135) and doubles (19). He also was one of a handful of Jayhawks to collect for hits in one game.
