JCCC first in Pepsi/NATYCAA Cup Standings

OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators recently presented the 2008 NATYCAA Cup Awards at its annual convention. The NATYCAA Cup Award recognizes program excellence in two-year college athletics at the national level. JCCC finished first in this year’s standings, its highest finish in the five-year history of the award.  JCCC has finished sixth, second and third twice in the previous four years.

Carl, Heinrich, JCCC athletics director, was presented the trophy at the James Corbett Awards Luncheon at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, Texas,  June 12, 2008. Kevin White, NACDA president and athletics director at the University of Notre Dame, was the presenter.

The awards are broken into three divisions -- scholarship, non-scholarship and state associations.  JCCC won the NJCAA Scholarship Division with 142 points, followed by Monroe Community College, N.Y., (133), Butler Community College, Kan. (132), Rend Lake Community College, Ill., (130.5) and Barton County Community College, Kan., (123.5).  The College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Ill, captured its fourth straight NJCAA Non-Scholarship Division title, and the State Association winner was Fresno City College of Fresno, Calif.

Scoring for the program is based on the highest level of competition at which the member colleges participate. Scoring is based on a maximum of 20 points for each sport with the NJCAA National Champion in each sport receiving 20 points, the National Runner-up receiving 19 points, third place 18 points, etc.

The pursuit of excellence is evident in Johnson County Community College intercollegiate athletics. JCCC Athletics is regarded throughout the region and nation as a first-class program and regularly ranks among the top of the national rankings. This year, 17 of JCCC’s 18 teams were ranked either before, during or at the end of the their season.
