JCCC wins two at Jayhawk Shootout
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College women’s basketball team, ranked No. 3 in the NJCAA D-II poll, rebounded from its upset loss at Brown Mackie last Wednesday, by posting two impressive wins at the Jayhawk Shootout in Coffeyville, Kan., over the weekend.
The Cavaliers opened the annual Kansas Jayhawk Conference showcase with a 79-67 victory over Seward County Community College, the NJCAA preseason No. 1 ranked Division I team and current No. 12 team in the country. JCCC followed with a 67-66 win over Garden City Community College.
JCCC dominated the Lady Saints on Friday evening in all facets of the game. The Cavaliers even out-rebounded Seward County, which was impressive considering the Lady Saints roster has seven players of six foot or taller. Additionally, JCCC handed Seward County its first loss at the shootout in nine years, snapping an 18-0 record dating back to 1998.
From the opening tip to the final buzzer, JCCC was in control and never trailed. Tied at 20-20 with 8:54 remaining in the first half, the Cavaliers went on a 13-0 run and took a nine point lead into the locker room at halftime.
Led by All-American Tegan Cunningham and Audra Binford, Seward County cut the Cavaliers lead to six with 11:02, but JCCC quickly countered with back-to-back 3-pointers by sophomores Erica Rothweiler and Brittney Slifer, and a lay-up by Misty Stone, to increase their lead to 14 points (59-45) with 9:18 remaining.
The Lady Saints again made run to cut their deficit to six with 2:06 left, but JCCC put the game away with a 9-3 run to finish the game.
Sophomore Meghan Waggoner led JCCC with 17 points and eight rebounds. She was 6-of-17 from the floor, with a 3-pointer, and 4-of-6 at the line. Also in double figures were sophomore Heather Rourk with 15, sophomore Bethany Schwab with 13 and Stone with 12. Schwab, who was the NJCAA D-II Player of the Week last week, hit three 3-point shots and is closing in on her 100th over her career. Stone hit an impressive 6-of-7 shots from the field.
Cunningham led all scorers with 33 points, a season-high for the All-American forward. Binford followed with 12 points.
JCCC followed with a one point victory over Garden City, but the Cavaliers also were in control of this game the entire way. In fact, JCCC once led by 20 points, and head coach Debbie Carrier unloaded her bench, and allowed her reserves to play some key minutes.
The Lady Broncbusters got hot in the final minutes, hitting several 3-point baskets, including one with two seconds remaining to cut the Cavaliers lead to one.
Schwab led JCCC with 18 points, and hit four 3-point baskets. She was also 6-of-6 at the free throw line. Rourk followed with 17 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Brittney Slifer had one of her better outings of the season, finishing with 14 points and four 3-pointers. Waggoner, the team’s top scorer this season, added 12 points.
