OVERLAND PARK, KS -- Johnson County Community College sophomore Katy Davenport of the women’s basketball team, and sophomore Aaron Linn of the men’s basketball team were announced as the female and male athletes of the year at JCCC’s annual awards dinner.  The event was held May 2nd at the Ritz Charles in Overland Park, Kan.   In addition, each team announced their most valuable player, Cavalier award winner and top academic sophomore.  Linn and sophomore Jessi Alford of the softball team were top academic student-athletes.

Davenport is one of only two JCCC players to earn All-American as a freshman and sophomore, and has etched her name among the best to wear a JCCC uniform.  She set the freshman scoring record last season and this year became just the third player in team history to top 1,000 points in a career, joining former All-Americans Lisa Kirby and Tonya Baucom in JCCC’s 1,000-point club.  Davenport ends her career at JCCC ranked among the all-time career leaders in several categories.  Most notably, Davenport moved into the No. 2 spot all-time in scoring with 1,293 points, and her 19.0 career points per game average is fourth-best in team history.  She also ranks second in career point field goals with 494, first in career free throws with 266, third in career free throw percentage at 762, nine in career rebounds with 476, and tied for 10th in career 3-point field goal percentage at .345.  In her two seasons, Davenport helped JCCC to back-to-back 20-win seasons, two Region VI D-II championships, a District title and a seventh-place finish in the National Tournament.  An outstanding student as well, and should also earn Academic All-America honors this year as well.

This season, Davenport began the campaign by earning NJCAA Preseason All-America honors, and ended the campaign with a selection to the NJCAA Division II All-America first -team.   She is the just the fifth to earn first-team All-American in team history.  Davenport led JCCC in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots.  She scored 654 points, an average of 19.8 per game.  That total ranks fifth on JCCC’s season chart, and her 19.8 per game average ranked eighth in the country. She also had 261 rebounds, an average of 7.9, and blocked 25 shots.  Her 261 rebounds tie the 14th-best season in team history.  Davenport hit 763 from the free throw line, which ranked her 45th nationally.  She was the team’s top scorer in 24 of 33 games, and top rebounder 18 times.  In early December, Davenport was selected as a NJCAA Division II Player of the Week, leading  Johnson County to three wins during the week of her honor.

Linn established himself as a top perimeter shooter in the Kansas Jayhawk Conference, Region VI and NJCAA during his career at JCCC. Earlier this season he became just the eighth player in team history to finish their career scoring over 1,000 points, and finished with 1,113 career points which ranks him third all-time in team history.  He also ranks second all-time in career 3-point field goals with 146, tied for second in free throws with 257 and fifth in career steals with 147.  Linn scored in double figures in 57 of the 66 games he played at JCCC.

Linn began the year by earning preseason All-America second-team honors by the NJCAA, and ended by being selected as a third-team NJCAA All-America performer.   He also was selected first-team NJCAA All-Region VI D-II and second-team All-East Jayhawk Conference.  Linn led the team in total points with 634 and was second in scoring average at 18.6.   His 634 points tie for fifth on JCCC’s season chart.  He also led the team with 78 3-point baskets and 80 steals.  Those totals ranks fifth and tied for 12th at JCCC.  Linn scored in double figures 29 times and hit for 20 or more points 13 times, and was the team’s leading scorer eight times.  Linn will also earn selection as a NJCAA Academic All-American.
