JCCC Women Harriers Win Conference, Finish Runner-up in Region

OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College women’s cross country team won its 15th East Jayhawk Conference cross country championship, and the ninth under head coach Mike Bloemker, yesterday at the KJCCC/Region VI Cross Country Championship in Arkansas City, Kan.  The team also finished a close second to a nationally ranked Butler County squad in the Region VI standings.  The championship meet was held at Camp Quaker Haven in Arkansas City

JCCC sophomore sensation Christa Heideman led the Lady Cavaliers placing third in the region standing, and runner-up in the East Jayhawk Conference.  She finished the 5k race in18:45.17, which is the sixth-best time posted in a region/conference meet in JCCC history.  Her effort earned her both All-Region VI and All-East Jayhawk Conference honors.

Freshman Francis Gipson also earned All-Region VI and All-East Jayhawk accolades, racing to a 10th place finish in the region and a fourth finish in the conference.  She finished with a time of 19:49.61.

Joining those two as all-conference performer was freshmen Temer Yimer and Courtney Price.  Yimer placed fifth in the conference with a time of 19:59.46.  Price was seventh overall with a time of 20:22.48.  They finished 12th and 17th respectively in the Region VI standings.

JCCC’s final three competitors was were sophomore Kay Thomason, who finished 8th and 18th overall with a time of 20:30.43: freshman Andrea Young, who placed 9th and 19th with a time of 20:32.09; and freshman Heather Kochie, who placed 11th and 21st respectively with a time of 20:42.17.
