JCCC women harriers win Cavalier Cup, men finish runner-up

    OVERLAND PARK, KS --  The Johnson County Community College women’s and men’s cross country teams hosted the annual Cavalier Cup last Friday evening, and both teams turned in impressive performances.  The Lady Cavaliers won the six team competition, while the men finished a close second to Cloud County, the nation’s third ranked team.

    On the women’s side, JCCC’s top five runners all placed among the top-10 finishers.  Leading the JCCC women were  freshman Christa Heideman of Wamego, Kan., and sophomore Jackie Jamison of Quinter, Kan.  Heideman was top medalists, crossing the finish line in 12:05 over the two mile course.  Jamison finished in 12:25.

    Also finishing in the top-10 were freshman Danielle Houltberg of Salina, Kan. (5th-12:37), Kay Thomason of Blue Valley Northwest (6th-12:44) and Sarah Dupree of Shawnee Mission Northwest (8th-13:13).  Rounding out JCCC’s team were freshman Samantha Parr  of Lansing, Kan. (13th-13:57) and freshman Jenna Wagoner of Wamego, Kan. (20th-14:21).

    The men had seven runners place among the top-11.  Leading the Cavalier men harriers was freshman sensation James Tong of North Kansas City, Mo.  Tong finished second overall with an impressive time of 15:29 over the 5k course.  

    Only 10 seconds separated the next four finishers for JCCC.  Freshman Trevor Johannsen of Clinton, Mo., placed fifth with a time  of 16:32.  He was followed by freshman Matt Bilhimer of Overbrook, Kan. (6th-16:33), freshman Grant Catloth of Baldwin City, Kan. (8th-16:40) and freshman Alex Troncoso of North Kansas City, Mo. (9th-16:42).    Freshman Daniel Everhart of Kansas City, Kan., and freshman Keith Cowart of Baldwin City, Kan., finished 10th and 11th respectively, crossing the finish line in 16:49 and 16:50.

    Rounding out JCCC’s competitors were freshman Kyle Morgison of Lawrence, Kan. (12th-16:50), sophomore David Franz of Clinton, Mo. (16th-17:43), freshman Dan Quillen of Olathe, Kan. (20th-17:47) and sophomore Jason Sorn of Shawnee Mission Northwest (23rd-17:54).
