Cavaliers win battle with cross-town rival

Meghan Waggoner

OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College women’s basketball, ranked No. 3 in the NJCAA Division II poll, handed cross-town rival Kansas City Kansas an 11-point loss Wednesday night, 73-62.  However, the Blue Devils made the Cavaliers work for this victory.

JCCC would appear to begin a run that would put the game away and the Devils would respond right back.  Leading by five at the break, KCK immediately cut their deficit to two points just 12 seconds into the second half on a 3-pointer by Ashleigh Gallio, her only bucket of the game.  But back-to-back baskets by JCCC sophomore Meghan Waggoner gave the Cavaliers another cushion.  Waggoner would score 11 of her game-high 20 points in the second half.

KCK would again make it a two point game with 9:13 left after a 3-pointer by Ann Borgertpoepping, but the Cavaliers responded with a lay up from Erica Rothweiler, a pair of baskets by Misty Stone and record setting 3-pointer from Bethany Schwab to give JCCC an 11-point lead and control of the game.  Schwab’s 3-pointer was her 125th of her career, breaking the school record form most career 3-point baskets.  Schwab finished with nine points, hitting 3-of-6 long range jumpers.

Also scoring in double figures for the Cavaliers were sophomores Meghan Rourk with 14 and Brittney Slifer with 10.  Rourk was the team’s top rebounder with seven, and Slifer followed with five.  Borgertpoepping led the Devils with 20 points, 17 coming in the second half.

The Cavaliers (14-5, 4-3) travel to Coffeyville (12-7, 6-1) Saturday, January 26th.
