Cavaliers ranked fourth nationally
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College women’s basketball team fell one spot to No. 4 in the weekly NJCAA Division II Basketball Poll. JCCC had held the third spot nationally the past two weeks. The Cavaliers posted victories over Fort Scott and Kansas City Kansas and road loss to Coffeyville last week, all Division I teams.
The Cavaliers are led by sophomore Meghan Waggoner who averages 16.4 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. In those three games last week, Waggoner averaged 20 points, 6 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 3.3 steals. She needs one more point to reach 700 for her career, making he the 20th player to reach that milestone in JCCC history.
Sophomore Bethany Schwab is second in scoring behind Waggoner averaging 10.7 per game. She also leads the squad with 62 3-point baskets, and recently became the program’s all-time leader for a career. She has 127 career 3-point field goals.
Another long-range shooter who has caught fire recently is sophomore Brittney Slifer. She has 45 3-point baskets this season, and 105 for her career. She is just the sixth Cavalier to hit over 100 3-point baskets. She is averaging 8.8 points and leads the team with 80 assists, an average of 4.0 per game.
Sophomore Heather Rourk, a preseason NJCAA All-American, is having a solid campaign. She is averaging 9.2 points and 5.1 rebounds. Freshman Danielle Shows leads the team in steals with 31 and is the team’s second leading rebounder with a 5.9 per game average.
