JCCC downs Penn Valley
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- For the second straight game, the Johnson County Community College women’s basketball opened the game on fire, built a 20-point lead, then held on for a victory. The latest, an 84-74 win over cross-town rival Penn Valley Community College.
Fueled by 63 percent shooting in the first half, JCCC built a lead up to 22 points before going in at the break up 18. However, as hot as they were in the first half, they were equally cold in the second, and Penn Valley dwindled their deficit to just seven points before the clock became their enemy as well. JCCC hit several key shots and free throws down the stretch to come away with a 10 point victory.
Sophomore Megan Waggoner led JCCC in scoring for the third time in four games this season, finishing with 24 points. She was 7-of-10 from the field, including a 3-pointer, and was a perfect 9-of-9 at the line. In fact, Waggoner is a perfect all season, hitting all 23 of her free throw attempts. She also had seven rebounds and three assists.
Also in double figures scoring for the Cavaliers were freshman Danielle Shows (13 points, 7 rebounds), sophomore Brittney Slifer (11 points, six rebounds, four assists) and freshman Jackie Hoyt (11 points). Natasha Turner led Penn Valley with 19 points, followed by Ashley Booker with 14.
JCCC, ranked no. 9 in the country, improves to 3-1. The Lady Cavaliers will play their next two contest in Honolulu, Hawaii in the Hoop 'N Surf Classic, Nov. 21-22.
