Second half surge leads JCCC to win over Independence The Johnson County Community College women’s basketball team snapped its two-game losing streak with an impressive home win over Independence, Saturday afternoon. Trailing by six at the break, JCCC shot 70 percent in the second half, leading to a 78-65 victory.
JCCC sophomore All-America center Katy Davenport led all scorers with 26 points, moving her closer to scoring her 1,000th career point. She enters Monday night’s game against Fort Scott needing only 28 points to reach that milestone.
While Davenport was again the leader, this victory was a total team effort. Freshman Brittney Slifer posted her best collegiate effort to date, scoring 18 points. She hit 7-of-9 field goals, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range. Freshman Heather Rourk also was in double figures, finishing with 10 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Sophomore point guard Jacky Smith dished out eight assists and scored seven points. Smith now has 293 career assists which ranks her fourth all-time. Freshman guard Bethany Schwab scored eighth points and had a team-high four steals, and freshman forward Meghan Waggoner had seven points and a game-high nine rebounds in the victory.
In addition to Davenport closing in on her 1,000th point, head coach Debbie Carrier is just one victory shy of her 200th as the Lady Cavaliers coach.
