JCCC defeats No. 17 Coffeyville
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College women’s basketball team handed Coffeyville Community College, ranked 17th in the latest NJCAA Division I poll, a 74-68 defeat Saturday afternoon. The victory snapped a 20-game losing streak to the Ravens in the all-time series, and handed Coffeyville its first loss in conference play this season.
The Lady Cavaliers used a strong defensive effort, particularly in the first half, to post one of its biggest wins of the season. JCCC held Coffeyville to just 26 percent shooting from the field in the first half, and led 30-24 at the break.
JCCC All-American center Katy Davenport led all scorers with 22 points. She also added 10 rebounds and three steals. Freshman Heather Rourk had a big game as well, finishing with 18 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Freshman forward Emily Larson came in off the bench and chipped in nine points on 4-of-5 shooting. Other key efforts were posted by freshman Brittney Slifer (8 points, 2 assists), freshman Meghan Waggoner (7 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists), and sophomore Jacky Smith (5 points, 5 rebounds, 9 assists). Smith’s nine-assist effort moved her past Beth Gaughan for second-place on the career assist chart at Johnson County. She has 352 in her career, just 25 shy of Emily Mayo’s all-time record.
Sade Bowen led Coffeyville with 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting. Tasha Parker followed with 13 points, and Shyvon Spears and Lacie Ward each added 10 points.
The Cavaliers have back-to-back road games this week beginning with a trip to Independence Community College on Wednesday night. They close out the week with a Saturday night game at Allen County Community College.
