JCCC holds off Fort Scott

OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College women’s basketball team improved to 13-5 on the season after holding on for an 82-75 home victory over Fort Scott, Wednesday night.

JCCC built a comfortable 16-point lead in the first half, and bumped their advantage to 22 points with just over 10 minutes to play.  However, the Greyhounds made a late run with seven minutes left, taking their 17-point deficit to just four points with 2:51 left to play.  Fort Scott shot 60 percent from the field  and hit all seven of their 3-pointers in the second half.

JCCC hit just one basket the final eight minutes, but were able to hold off the upset by knocking down their free throws.  Freshman Katie Buenger hit five down the stretch, sophomore Bethany Schwab hit three and sophomore Meghan Waggoner nailed both her attempts in the final minute.  Waggoner led JCCC with 21 points and a career high seven steals.  Buenger finished with 11 points and Schwab hit for 14 points.

The Cavaliers built their first half advantage behind the hot shooting of sophomore Brittney Slifer.  She scored 11 of her 14 points in the first half, nailing 4-of-6 shots, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range.

Brittany English and Kenya Doss led Fort Scott with 25 and 23 points respectively.
