JCCC avenges loss to Brown Mackie, hits break at 9-2

OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College women’s basketball team downed Brown Mackie 77-64, Thursday night, avenging an earlier loss to the Lions. The victory improves JCCC to 9-2 overall.

Freshman Katie Buenger came off the bench to score 16 points, 10 in the first half, to power the No. 5 ranked Cavaliers to the win. Buenger, a 3A All-State player from Osage City, Kan., hit 8 of her 9 shots from field. It is her fourth game to finish in double figures as a collegiate player, and her 16 points are a season high.

Sophomore Brittney Slifer was the only other Cavalier to finish in double figures, pouring in 12 points. She also had five assists and five rebounds. Sophomores Bethany Schwab and Meghan Waggoner were close to the double figures, each chipping in nine points. Schwab hit three 3-pointer. Her second long-ranger of the night was her 100th of her career at JCCC, making her the fifth player in team history to reach that milestone. He needs just 24 more this season to become the all-time leader. Waggoner nearly had a double-double, finishing with a team-high nine rebounds.

Other key efforts were turned in by freshman Danielle Shows (7 points, 7 rebounds), sophomore Heather Rourk (6 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists) and sophomore Erica Rothweiler (6 points, 4 assists).

Whitney Holm paced Brown Mackie (7-7) with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Robbin Webber had 21 points, Monica Burgess 11, and LaChelle Hyatt 14 rebounds. The Lions shot 36.4 percent (24 of 66) from the field.
