OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The No. 3 ranked Johnson County Community College women’s basketball team improved to 5-1 on the season, posting two wins at the Hoop-N-Surf Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii last weekend. JCCC downed the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County 97-51 on Wednesday night, then capped the trip with a buzzer-beater victory over Jones County Junior College, 82-81, on Thanksgiving Day.
In JCCC’s 46-point win over Marathon County, the Cavaliers had a battle through the first 12 minutes before going on a 15-1 run with 7:01 mark of the first half. Sophomore Heather Rourk who finished with 15 points, began the run with a lay up, helping JCCC go from a nine point lead to a 23-point advantage in a three minute span. JCCC would lead by 24 at the break, 49-25.
JCCC built its lead to 30 points just four minutes into the second half, and continued to add to its lead as the game progressed. Sophomore Meghan Waggoner led all scorers with 18 points. She was 9-of-13 from the field, and had four rebounds. Freshman Jackie Hoyt poured in 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting, and had eight boards. Also in double figures was freshman Katie Buenger with 10 points, hitting 5-of-7 of her shots. Sophomores Bethany Schwab and Misty Stone each chipped in nine points. Schwab also led with seven assists, and Stone hauled down nine rebounds.
In the second game, Schwab and Waggoner keyed the offense, scoring 29 and 24 points respectively. Both were also selected to the All-Classic Team. Schwab hit 9-of-10 shots, all from 3- point range, setting a new single-game record at JCCC. Her 29 points are also a career high as a collegiate player. Schwab also dished out five assists and had four rebounds.
Waggoner again hit 9-of-13 shots, including two 3-pointers, and was 4-of-5 at the line. Her miss was the first of the season. She is 27-of-28 on the season, and hit 23 straight before missing. Waggoner also had five rebounds and an assist.
However, it was freshman Danielle Shows' basket at the buzzer that proved the biggest of the game. Trailing by one Shows got a steal, then drove down the lane, threw up a shot and drained it to give JCCC a one-point win over Jones County. It was Shows only basket of the game.
Kate Hubbard led Jones County with 22 points, followed by Demara Bolton with 19.
JCCC travels to Salina, Kan., Wednesday night for a region D-II match against Brown Mackie. They follow that game with a pair of games against Seward County and Garden City at the Jayhawk Shootout in Coffeyville, Kan.
