Davenport earns NJCAA D-II Player of the Week honors
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- Johnson County Community College center Katy Davenport has been selected as a NJCAA Division II Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 5, 2006. She shares the honor with Kimberly Karges of Spoon River College. Davenport led Johnson County to three wins during the week of her honor. She averaged 28.3 points and 8.3 rebounds while leading JCCC victories over Penn Valley, Butler, and Pratt.
In the win over Penn Valley Nov. 28, Davenport scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds in a 67-59 victory. On Dec 1, against Butler at the Jayhawk Shootout in Coffeyville, Kan., Davenport torched the Grizzlies for 36 points, a career-high effort. She scored 30 of those points in the second half to power JCCC to a 78-70 win. She also added 10 rebounds in that win. She followed with a 28-point, eight-rebound effort to lead the Cavaliers to a 70-58 win over Pratt in the second game of the Shootout.
Through 13 games this season Davenport is averaging 21.3 points per game, the sixth highest average in the nation. She has been JCCC’s top scorer in all but two games to date, and and has finished in double figures all 13 games. She has topped 20 or more points in seven of those contests.
Davenport is also closing on scoring her 1,000 point at JCCC, a milestone only matched by two other players in team history. She currently has 920 career points, seventh all-time at JCCC. She only needs 34 point to move into the third spot on the career chart.
Davenport led JCCC in scoring last season with 639 points, an average of 18.3 points per game, which ranked her among the NJCAA leaders. Her 639 total points rank as the fifth-best season total in team history, and highest effort by a freshman. Davenport ranked second on the team averaging 6.1 rebounds per game, and she shot .761 from the free throw line, which ranks her eighth on the season chart. She also had enough attempts to qualify for the career chart, and her .761 percentage ranks third all-time. Davenport scored in double figures in 32 of JCCC’s 35 games, and scored 20 or more points in 17 games, including a career-best 31 points to lead JCCC to a 76-69 overtime win against Redlands in the District B Championship. She had five double-doubles on the season. Her efforts help lead JCCC to a 23-12 record and seventh-place finish in the NJCAA D-II National Tournament. She earned NJCAA third-team All-American, first-team All-Region VI and first-team East Jayhawk All-Conference accolades. She was also selected as a NJCAA all-tournament performer and to play in the inaugural NJCAA All-Star Games in Lubbock, Texas last summer.
