JCCC women’s basketball team wins academic award

OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) recently announced the top winter/spring academic teams for the 2006-07 season, and the Johnson County Community College women’s basketball team was honored for its academic excellence.  The Lady Cavaliers posted a team grade point average of 3.42, which ranked as the third-best GPA in the country.  

In addition, sophomore center Katy Davenport of Manhattan, Kan., and sophomore point guard Jackie Smith of Leawood, Kan., were honored as NJCAA Distinguished Academic All-Americans.

Other members of the 2006-07 team were: freshmen Erica Rothweiler of Rose Hill, Kan., Brittnay Slifer of Warrensburg, Mo., Bethany Schwab of Wellsville, Kan., Heather Rourk of Iola, Kan., Emily Larson of Colony, Kan., Meghan Waggoner of Carthage, Mo., and Misty Stone of Hoyt,

On the floor, the Lady Cavaliers posted a record of 23-10 and were Region VI Division II champions for an eighth straight season.

JCCC is led by head coach Debbie Carrier, along with her assistant, Beth Hinkebein.
