Fast start leads to victory over Coffeyville
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- Plagued by slow starts in recent games, the Johnson County Community College women’s basketball team bucked that trend Monday night, and the result was an impressive 80-65 home win over Coffeyville Community College. The Ravens, who came in tied for first place in the East Jayhawk Conference, were outplayed by the Cavaliers on both ends of the floor. The victory improved JCCC’s season mark to 19-8 overall, while Coffeyville fell to 18-9.
The Cavaliers took control from the opening tip and led 41-27 at halftime. JCCC nearly doubled that lead in the second half, before several late 3-pointers by the Ravens cut their deficit to 15 at the final buzzer.
Sophomore Megan Waggoner led the Cavaliers with 20 points, hitting 6-of-11 shots, including a perfect 2-of-2 from 3-point range. She also had six rebounds and three assists. Sophomores Brittney Slifer and Heather Rourk followed with 19 points each. Slifer hits 7-of-11 from the field, including 5-of-7 from 3-point range. Rourk hit five field goals, including a 3-pointer, and was 8-of-10 at the line. Freshman Danielle Shows finished with six points, and a game high 11 rebounds and five assists.
The Cavaliers have three games remaining in the regular season. They travel Wednesday and Saturday to Fort Scott and Kansas City Kansas, then cap the season at home against Highland, Monday, Feb. 25.
