OVERLAND PARK, KS -- Johnson County Community College sophomores Megan Waggoner and Brittney Slifer have been selected to the 2008 NJCAA Division II All-America Basketball Team.  Waggoner, a forward from Carthage, Mo., earned second-team honors.  Slifer, a guard from Warrensburg, Mo., was named to the third team.  Both players also earned All-East Jayhawk Conference and All-Region VI honors this season.

Waggoner and Slifer become the 13th and 14th individuals to earn All-America honors at JCCC.  It is just the second time JCCC has had two players honored in the same year.  The first was 2006 when Becca Boan and Katy Davenport both earned honored.

The pair led JCCC to one of its greatest seasons ever.  JCCC posted a school record 28 wins and finished fifth at the 2008 NJCAA D-II National Tournament.

Waggoner led JCCC in scoring averaging 17.5 points per game.  She also shot a team-best .420 from 3-point range, and was second in rebound average at 6.7 per game.  Her 17.5 per game average ranked 19th in the NJCAA.   Waggoner led JCCC in scoring in 24 games and was the top rebounder 15 times.  She also recorded four double-doubles and scored in double figures in 34 of JCCC’s 37 games.

Waggoner had an amazing performance at the national tournament.  She earned NJCAA D-II All-Tournament accolades after averaging 27.3 points and 6.7 rebounds in the three games.  Her 82 total points and 27.3 average set JCCC records for tournament play.  Waggoner began the tournament with a career high 29-point effort in a loss to Mott, then followed with another career game, finishing with a new career-best 31 points in an 85-61 win over Genesee.  She capped the tournament with a 22-point effort in a win over Carl Sandburg.

For her career, Waggoner finished with 1,018 points, becoming just the fourth player in JCCC history to score over 1,000 points in a career.  She also ranks tied for career rebounds with 476, ranks seventh in career field goals with 369, first in career 3-point field goals accuracy at .418, fourth in career free throws with 224 and third in career free throw percentage at .794.

Waggoner will continue her athletic and academic careers at the University of Central Missouri.

Slifer started every game in her two seasons at JCCC.  This season, Slifer averaged 9.6 points, 3.5 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game.  She shot .404 from 3- point range, hitting 88-of-218 shots.  Her 88 3-point baskets tie the second-best season in team history.  Slifer scored in double figures 19 times this season, and was the game’s leading scorer twice.

For her career, Slifer knocked down 148 shots from 3-point range, the second-best career total in team history.  She also shot .415 from long range in her two seasons, which also ranks her second all-time.  Slifer hit three or more 3-point baskets 22 times in her career, including eight against LSU-Eunice in the District title game in 2007.  That effort tied the school record at the time.
