Speed keys JCCC victory

OVERLAND PARK, KS -- Kyle Speed scored 18 points in leading Johnson County Community College to a 74-56 home victory over Brown Mackie College on Thursday night. The victory raises Johnson County's record to 8-3 overall, 3-1 in NJCAA Division II Region 6 play. Brown Mackie falls to 7-8 overall, 2-2 in the region.

Speed hit 6 of 10 shots from the field, including two 3-pointers, and was 4 of 6 at the line. He also had five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Fred Patton and David Yadrich each added 14 points for the Cavaliers. Patton did his damage in the paint and at the line, while Yadrich hit four bombs from 3-point range.

JCCC leading scorer, Nafis Ricks, was held to nine points, but he also led all player with eight rebounds. Eddy Jean-Pierre had a solid night off the bench, finishing with seven points, seven rebounds and two steals.

Omar Westmoreland led Brown Mackie with 12 points, hitting 5 of his 6 shots, and also had a team-high six rebounds. Marquis Whitt and Earnest Noel scored nine apiece.

Johnson County built a 35-22 halftime lead by holding the Lions to 29.2 percent shooting (7 of 24) the first half. The Cavaliers shot 46.6 percent from the field (27 of 58) -- including 8 of 20 from 3-point range -- for the game. Brown Mackie shot 38.8 percent (19 of 49) for the game and was 2 of 17 beyond the arc.
