College Information and Publications 11/30/2007 Cavaliers use balanced attack to down Brown Mackie OVERLAND PARK, KS -- Six Johnson County Community College players scored in double figures and the Cavaliers pulled down 22 offensive rebounds en route to an impressive 96-85 road win over Region VI D-II rival Brown Mackie at Banes Gymnasium in Salina, Kan. The victory was JCCC’s fourth straight, and improves the Cavaliers, ranked 11th in the NJCAA, to 6-1 overall. JCCC freshman Nafis Ricks, the recent NJCAA D-II Player of the Week, led the Cavaliers with 21 points. He hit 7-of-11 shots, including a 3-pointer, and was 6-of-9 at the line. The team’s leader in both points and rebounds, also hauled down eight caroms. He also had five assists and five steals. Also in double figures were sophomore guard Melvin Cole and freshman forward Anthony Dobson with 12 points each. Sophomore Jonathan Jackson followed with 11 points, six boards and five assists. Freshman forward Eddy Jean-Pierre and sophomore forward Q Totta chipped in 10 points. Jean-Pierre led all players with 11 rebounds. Freshman guards Kyle Speed and David Yadrich were close double figures, finishing with nine and eight points respectively. “We’re doing two things right,” said head coach Mike Jeffers following the game. “We are sharing the ball, and we’re doing a good jump of forcing turnovers at the right time and getting some easy points when the other team is starting to make a run. That’s what we did with Cloud and Hutch, and that’s we did tonight.” JCCC led 45-39 at halftime, but Brown Mackie started the half with a basket to cut their deficit to four, but that would as close as the Lions would get. The Cavaliers promptly went on 16-2 run and held its biggest lead of game, 71-50, with 13 minutes remaining. Brown Mackie did fight back, going on their own run of 25-12 to make it 83-75 at the 4:45 mark, but JCCC scored eight of the 10 points to put game away. While JCCC possessed a balanced attack, most of Brown Mackie’s scoring, now 6-5 overall, was provided by two players, Ernest Noel and Bryson Flax. Noel led all scorers with 34 points, hitting 13-of-24, including 7-of-10 from 3-point range. Flax added 13 points. http://www.jccc.edu/athletics |
