Cavaliers snap losing streak, win first game for interim coach

OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College men’s basketball team experienced several first in their 106-77 victory over Neosho County, Saturday afternoon.   It was the first win in the conference for JCCC, the first win since Dec. 6 and it was the first win under interim head coach Zac Roman.  The victory snapped JCCC’s six-game losing streak, upping the team’s season mark to 6-11 overall.  Roman improves to 1-1 since taking over for Mike Jeffers who was granted a medical leave of absence last week.

The Cavaliers put together it most impressive performance of the season.  The team shot 58 percent from the floor, and 62 percent from 3-point range.  Sophomore center Corey May led all scorers, pouring in a career-best 34 points.  May hit 12-of-20 shots, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range.  He was 8-of-11 from the line.  He also had eight rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots.

Patrick Nemechek also had a career night, finishing with 20 points, hitting 6-of-11 from 3-point range.  His six 3-pointers tie the eighth-best game in team history.  Also in double figures were sophomore Aaron Linn (15 points), freshman Anthony Spencer (15 points) and freshman Matt Smith (10 points).  Sophomore guard Russell Revels nearly recorded a triple-double, finishing with eight points, nine rebounds and 10 assists.    Sophomore Caleb Bradley also provided solid minutes off the bench.  He was a perfect 1-for-1 from the field and 2-for-2 from the line, giving him four points.  He also had two rebounds and three steals.

The Cavaliers look to make it two straight wins Monday night when they travel to Labette.
