Cavaliers advance to national tournament

The Johnson County Community College men’s basketball team is headed to the “Big Dance”.  The Cavaliers advanced to the NJCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship next week in Danville, Ill, by defeating St. Louis Community College-Forest Park Tuesday night, 79-59.  This will be JCCC’s second appearance in Danville, and third national tournament appearance overall in the team’s history. JCCC went to the Division I tournament in 1976, and won the D-II championship in 2001.

The Cavaliers took control in the first half, and built a 13-point lead at halftime.  JCCC added to its lead in the second half and cruised to the 20-point victory.

Sophomore center Corey May led the Cavaliers with 25 points.  He was 10-of-18 from the field and a perfect 5-of-5 at the line.  He also had eight rebounds.  Anthony Spencer and Aaron Linn followed with 19 and 17 points respectively.  Spencer, one of the top rebounders in NJCAA D-II this season, led all players with nine.

JCCC, 16-17 on the season and 11-7 under interim head coach Zac Roman, will face either Kirkwood Community College or Mott Community College, Thursday, March 22nd, at 6:30 p.m.
