JCCC falls at buzzer to Penn Valley
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- Pierre DeClue had just one offensive rebound in the game, but for Penn Valley Community College it could not have come at a better time. DeClue got the rebound off a Penn Valley miss just outside the paint near the baseline with three seconds remaining in a 65-65 tie with Johnson County Community College. He then threw up a prayer high off the glass that banged around the rim, then fell though as the buzzer sounded, giving the Scouts a thrilling two-point victory over the Cavaliers, their first loss of the season.
Penn Valley dominated the glass all night, particularly on the offensive end. The Scouts had 26 offensive rebounds, which provided Penn Valley several second-chance opportunities.
The Scouts played zone most of game, and early in the first half it frustrated the Cavaliers offensively. JCCC shot just 28 percent, and were just 1-of-10 from 3-point range, which led to a nine-point halftime deficit.
However, the Cavaliers fought back in the second half, and with two minutes left led by four points. But the Cavaliers could not close out the game. Turnovers down the stretch and their inability to control the boards led to their eventual loss.
Freshman Eddy Jean-Pierre led JCCC with 15 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Jonathan Jackson followed with 11 points and four assists. Sophomore Q Totta and freshman Kyle Speed each added nine points. Gregory Smith led the Scouts with 16 points and 14 rebounds, seven on the offensive end.
