JCCC punches out Kansas City Kansas
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College men’s basketball team had one of its best overall team efforts this season, and the result was a dominating performance against cross-town rival Kansas City Kansas Community College. The Cavaliers defeated the Blue Devil 74-46, but this game was over in the first half.
Tied at 4-4 with just under 17 minutes to play, JCCC outscored KCKCC 31-to-6 the rest of the way, holding the Devils to a 2-point basket, a 3-pointer and a free throw. It was such a dominating effort that until the Devils Dusty Burdolski hit a 3-point bucket with a minute left in the half, the Cavaliers Kyle Speed, Nafis Ricks and Q. Totta each had more points than the entire KCK team. JCCC hit 12-of-29 shots in the first half, including 7-of-10 from 3-point range. KCK was just 4-of-18 from the field that half.
The second half JCCC was on cruise control, and the Cavaliers reserves were able see some significant minutes. Speed led the Cavaliers with a career-high 27 points and 11 rebounds, his first collegiate double-double. Speed also had four assists and three steals. He was 11-of-17 from the field, including 5-of-8 from the 3-point range.
Ricks followed with 14 points, six boards, three assists and four steals, and Totta chipped in 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Freshman Anthony Dobson had a solid night with eight rebounds, five on the offensive end, and reserve forward Kyle DeBerg had a career high five rebounds and added two points.
