Shelley announced tri-captains for 2008 season
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- Johnson County Community College head baseball coach Kent Shelley announced today the three players who will serve as tri-captains of the 2008 season. Sophomore infielder Doug Otto, sophomore pitcher Dustin Holthaus and freshman pitcher Ryan Garman have been selected by their teammates and coaches to serve as a captain.
Otto, a slick-fielding middle infielder from Jefferson City, Mo., possesses a live arm and great range from his shortstop position. As a freshman, Otto hit .231 (27-for-117) with five doubles, four triples and 26 runs batted in. His four triples led the team. He also drew 17 free passes, which tied him for second on the squad.
“Doug is a great student, hard worker and a natural leader,” Shelley said. “He will be counted on to anchor the defense and provide offensive power in this year’s line up.”
Holthaus, a talented right-hander from Topeka, Kan., finished his freshman campaign with a 6-3 record, with 25 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings on the hill. He also posted an earned run average of 1.60, best among the starting rotation. Holthaus made 12 appearances, six as a starter, and recorded two complete games.
“Dustin is also a great student, hard worker and leader,” Shelley said “He will be counted on as one of our staff’s top starters, and will be asked to serve as a leader to our young pitchers this season.”
Garman will be a key addition to the pitching staff this season. During the fall, Garman pitched a team high 27 innings, and had a team-best 36 strikeouts. He posted an earned run average of 2.33, and held his opponents to a batting average of 200.
‘Ryan work ethic is second to none.” Shelley said. “He refused to lose and is the type of player who wants the ball in tough situations. He will be counted on to give us quality innings as one of our starters.”
